A familiar food, an unfamiliar package: shopping in Finland

Your recipe calls for buckwheat. One package says Tattarisuurimot, another says Tattarijauho. Which one do you need? Everyday shopping can raise small questions about names, ingredients and differences between similar products. JVSFood helps you start with one question and explore available information.

What is buckwheat called in Finnish?

Look for Tattarisuurimot for buckwheat groats. In Swedish, the names are bovete / bovetegryn. Enter a familiar name in JVSFood to see local names and guidance about the type of food.

Flour and flakes are different products. Groats can be roasted or unroasted, so check the form on the package. Names and packaging examples help you orient yourself; they do not confirm stock in your local shop.

Already holding a package?

Open JVSFood and scan the barcode or enter it manually. If a record is available, the service shows the ingredients and nutrition information it contains. Some ingredient names have translations; where no translation exists, the original name appears.

Missing products and incomplete information are marked. You can suggest a missing product. Always read the current package before buying: recipes and labels can change.

How do you compare two similar products?

Open the first product and add it to comparison, then open the second. Compare similar foods and check that both values use the same basis: per 100 g or per 100 ml. If a value is missing, you cannot determine that difference.

You decide what matters for your purchase. Available information helps you see differences that may be hard to spot on the front of a package.

Try one product before your next shopping trip

Open JVSFood and choose “Find a product”. Enter a familiar name, or choose “Try a sample” to explore a product record. The service works in a browser with Finnish, Swedish, English and Russian interfaces.

JVSFood is in beta and the database is growing. For allergies or intolerances, always check the current package and manufacturer guidance. The service does not certify product safety.
