Windows 11 taskbar missing: hidden or stuck?

Move the pointer to the bottom edge, then try the desktop with Windows + D. If the taskbar appears there but not in one app, check full-screen mode first. If it appears only at the edge, check automatic hiding. Do not start by resetting the computer.

Safe checking order

  1. Identify the missing part: the taskbar contains app buttons and the clock. Missing desktop icons or a browser address bar are different symptoms. Save unfinished work before restarting; checking the display mode does not require closing apps.
  2. Move the pointer to the bottom edge and wait briefly. Press Windows + D to show the desktop; press it again to restore the windows. Compare the desktop with the affected app. One failed test does not mean Windows is damaged.
  3. If this happens in Microsoft Edge, F11 toggles full-screen mode. Try once and check the result; some laptops require Fn + F11. In a game or video player, use its own full-screen control or instructions. F11 is not a universal fix for every app.
  4. Open Settings with Windows + I, then Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors. If Automatically hide the taskbar is selected, clear it for a test. Recheck the desktop and the same app. Restore the option if you prefer automatic hiding. Labels can vary slightly.
  5. With two monitors, inspect both before changing settings. Missing only on one display is different from missing everywhere. Check the taskbar's multiple-display options. On a 2-in-1, folding the keyboard into tablet mode can also change the taskbar presentation; try the normal laptop position.
  6. If the taskbar is missing on the desktop too and changing auto-hide does not help, save all work and restart normally. If Start will not open, the Ctrl + Alt + Delete screen has a power menu with Restart. Do not substitute a long power-button hold for an ordinary test. If the device is unresponsive or work cannot be saved, stop and ask for help.

Symptoms and possible causes

Comparison checklist: appears at the edge → inspect hiding; missing only in Edge or video → inspect full-screen mode; visible on another monitor → inspect display-specific settings; absent everywhere with Start also misbehaving → an interface fault is possible. These observations narrow the issue; they are not a diagnosis or a promised fix.

What not to do

  • Do not install taskbar repair utilities or run registry commands copied from the web.
  • Do not delete a user profile, reset Windows or replace drivers on this symptom alone.
  • Do not force shutdown during saving or updates. Do not change several settings at once.

When to stop

If settings are managed by an organisation, contact its administrator. If the problem returns after a normal restart, record where the taskbar disappears and what you tried. Mention any taskbar customisation tool already installed; do not install another one. A completely black display or repeated freezing needs separate investigation.
