C drive full? Check before deleting files

Safe checking order

1. Open Settings → System → Storage. Let the calculation finish, then note free space on C and the largest category. Space available on another drive does not mean C has room.
2. Open Cleanup recommendations and read the descriptions. Do not accept every selection at once. Downloads and the Recycle Bin may contain files you still need. Removing the previous Windows version removes the option to return to it.
3. If personal videos or photos dominate, first copy important files to a reliable backup and open the copies to check them. Only then decide which local files to remove. A single remaining copy on an external drive is not a backup.
4. If apps dominate, review usage and personal projects before uninstalling normally. Do not delete application folders manually. If System or reserved storage is largest, leave it alone and seek help if needed.
5. Check free space again in the same view. JVS Tuki comparison: record it before and after one change, then the next day. If space disappears quickly again, investigate the cause before another cleanup.

Symptoms and possible causes

Personal files, apps and temporary files call for different actions. Reserved system space is not automatically waste. A red bar indicates little free space, not proof of a failing drive. Full cloud storage is a separate problem from a full C drive.

What not to do

• Do not randomly delete Windows, Program Files or AppData folders. Avoid unfamiliar cleanup utilities.
• Before enabling automatic Storage Sense, review its Recycle Bin, Downloads and cloud-file settings. It works on the system drive; online-only files may require internet access.
• Do not delete a OneDrive file merely to reclaim local space: synced deletion is different from freeing its local copy. Check cloud status and offline needs first.

When to stop

Stop if you cannot identify a large item, have no verified backup, or encounter file read errors. Ask the administrator about a work PC. Storage that rapidly fills again needs a cause identified, not repeated blind deletion.
