Wi-Fi is connected, but the internet is slow: check these before buying a new router

The Wi-Fi icon only shows that your device is linked to the router. It does not prove that the router has internet access or that the wireless path through your home is good. This test narrows down the cause without guesswork or unnecessary purchases.

Short answer: run these five tests

  1. Try the same connection on at least two devices.
  2. Test beside the router and again in the room where the problem occurs.
  3. If possible, connect a computer directly to the router with Ethernet.
  4. Check your provider's outage information and restart the modem or router calmly.
  5. Record the speed-test result, time, room and device. One number rarely explains the whole problem.

1. Fix router placement before changing settings

Put the router in an open, reasonably high and central position. A cabinet, floor, the back of a television, thick concrete, metal surfaces and appliances can weaken the link. A mobile router often needs a good path towards the cellular base station near a window, while its Wi-Fi must still cover the home, so testing several positions can be worthwhile.

2. 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?

2.4 GHz usually reaches farther and suits many smart-home devices, but it is more crowded. 5 GHz normally offers better speed near the router, but walls attenuate it more. If your router automatically steers devices between bands, do not change channels or network names just in case.

3. An extender or mesh cannot repair a wrong diagnosis

An extra access point needs a good link of its own. An extender placed in a dead zone simply repeats a weak connection. Put a mesh point between the router and the problem room, not at the far end of that room. If Ethernet cabling is available, a wired access point is often the most predictable option.

What not to do first

  • Do not factory-reset the router until you know the provider settings and have saved the current details.
  • Do not disable Wi-Fi security or select obsolete security just to improve speed.
  • Do not buy a faster subscription, router and extender at the same time—you will not know what actually helped.
