Phone and data transfer
Phone does not detect a USB-C drive or accessory
Check the connector, cable, power and permission first. Do not format a drive before important files are backed up.

Quick checklist
- Unlock the phone, then unplug and reconnect the device.
- Try another cable or adapter; some USB-C cables carry power but not data.
- On Android open Files, or on iPhone open Files, and check for the drive.
- Test the same drive on another device to narrow the fault.
- If the drive asks to be formatted, stop and confirm a backup first.
- If the connector gets hot, feels loose or smells burnt, disconnect it.
The symptom narrows the cause
The same symptom can come from a charge-only cable, insufficient power, file-system support, permission, or a worn port.
| No notification | Unlock the phone, change cable/adapter and try another port. |
|---|---|
| Drive appears but files do not | Open the correct Files app and allow access. |
| Computer sees it, phone does not | Check OTG/USB support and power needs; try a smaller drive. |
| Phone asks to format | Do not accept before backup; the file system may not be supported. |
| Connection drops when moved | The cable or port may be worn; do not bend the plug. |
Android
- Google's Files guidance says USB storage is supported on Android 7.0 and newer and appears in Files under Storage devices.
- Open the USB notification, tap Allow, then check the drive in Files.
- On some phones OTG turns off after a period without use.
iPhone
- Apple's guidance uses the Files app for external storage; a USB-C iPhone may need a powered hub for a drive without its own power.
- If no permission prompt appears, unlock the iPhone, disconnect and reconnect.
- Do not run a power-hungry drive without its own power supply or a compatible hub.
What not to do
- Do not format a drive that holds the only copies of files.
- Do not force the plug or clean the port with metal.
- Do not install random OTG drivers or apps requesting unnecessary access.
- Stop if the port gets hot or the device has been wet.

When is help worthwhile?
If several known-good cables and drives fail, or the port is loose, JVS Tuki can separate compatibility, port and file-system causes.
