Paying for subscriptions you do not use? A 15-minute check could save hundreds

Streaming, apps, cloud storage, games and other recurring services can charge you month after month without attracting attention. Audit your subscriptions before you pay again for something you no longer need.

What does recent Finnish research show?

  • In Traficom's late-2025 consumer survey of 3,000 adults, households spent an average of €29 per month on streaming; the median was €20.
  • In a Dynata survey commissioned by Revolut among 1,000 Finnish residents, almost half said they paid for services they used rarely or not actively. One in five estimated wasting €5–10 per month.
  • In an Iro Research survey commissioned by POP Bank among 1,000 Finns, 24% said they had dropped at least one streaming service during 2025.

A small monthly charge becomes a large annual cost

One unused €9.99 subscription costs €119.88 a year. Two subscriptions at €12.99 cost €311.76 a year. These are calculation examples, not survey findings.

Run a 15-minute subscription audit

  1. Open at least three months of bank and credit-card transactions. Also check PayPal, your mobile bill, App Store and Google Play.
  2. List every recurring charge: price, billing date, where it is managed and when you last used it.
  3. Look for household duplicates. The same content, cloud storage or software may be billed to two accounts.
  4. Choose for each service: keep, downgrade, pause or cancel. You can rotate streaming services by season.
  5. Cancel where the subscription was purchased. Deleting an app does not stop billing. Save the cancellation confirmation.
  6. Check the next statement. If billing continues or a term seems unfair, complain to the provider in writing.

Where can hidden subscriptions be found?

Bank and payment cardLook for the same small amounts recurring monthly or annually.
Apple App StoreSettings → your name → Subscriptions.
Google PlayPlay Store → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.
Mobile operator billCheck paid content, device services and security packages.
EmailSearch for receipt, subscription, renewal and trial.
Household accountsCheck whether someone else already pays for the same service or family plan.

Do not cancel these blindly

  • Cloud storage: first make sure your photos and files fit the remaining allowance or move them safely.
  • Security, VPN and password managers: make a migration plan before access ends.
  • Family plans: check the effect on other users, profiles and purchases.
  • Fixed-term contracts: check the end date and terms. KKV says these generally cannot be cancelled mid-term.
