Phone keeps disconnecting from Wi-Fi

First find out whether the drop affects only this phone, only one network or every device. That single comparison tells you whether to focus on the phone, router or internet connection.

Phone with an intermittent Wi-Fi connection to a home router

Quick checklist

  1. In the same spot, test another device and test the phone on another Wi-Fi network.
  2. Restart the phone, then turn Wi-Fi off and back on.
  3. Forget only the affected network and join it again with the correct password.
  4. Update the phone and restart the home router by unplugging it for about 30 seconds.
  5. Check VPN, security, parental-control and filtering apps before resetting network settings.

Symptoms and likely direction

If other devices drop on the same network, the router, coverage or internet service is more likely. If only the phone fails on every network, focus on its software and network settings. If it fails only on one network, compatibility or that network's settings are more likely.

What not to do

  • Do not factory-reset the router: its internet and Wi-Fi configuration may be lost.
  • Do not reset the phone's network settings first; saved Wi-Fi passwords, VPN and other network settings will be removed.
  • Do not remove a work or school VPN or management profile without the administrator's approval.

When to stop

Stop changing settings if you do not manage the router, the connection belongs to work or housing, or several devices lose internet. Contact the network administrator or ISP instead.
