Phone screen will not rotate
Check rotation lock first and try another app. Some apps do not support landscape mode, so the phone may be fine.

Quick checklist
- Turn the phone in an app known to support landscape, such as Safari or Calculator.
- Open quick settings and turn off Portrait Orientation Lock on iPhone, or enable Auto-rotate on Android.
- Close and reopen the app; also try restarting the phone.
- Check whether TalkBack or another accessibility feature changes rotation behaviour.
- Remove the case briefly and make sure the screen and sensors are clean.
- If a level or other sensor feature also fails, seek an assessment.
The symptom narrows the cause
Rotation problems are usually a lock or app limitation, and less often a sensor or software issue.

Android
- Google's guidance uses Settings > Display & touch > Auto-rotate screen.
- With TalkBack, auto-rotation can interrupt spoken feedback and may be intentionally off.
- Test another app and restart before considering a reset.
iPhone
- Apple says to open Control Centre and turn off Portrait Orientation Lock.
- Not every app supports rotation; try Safari or the Level feature in Measure.
- If it still fails, Apple recommends restarting the iPhone.
What not to do
- Do not factory-reset for a symptom in one app.
- Do not install unknown sensor apps or grant unnecessary access.
- Do not shake or knock the phone to wake a sensor.
- Stop if the phone is damaged and other sensors fail.
