Phone will not scan a QR code

Open Camera or a QR scanner, place the code in even light and hold steady. Do not open an unknown link just because it appears.

Phone scanning a QR code on a desk

Quick checklist

  1. Clean the lens and use even light without glare.
  2. Keep the whole code in frame, straighten the phone and try a little farther away.
  3. On iPhone use Camera in Photo mode or Scan Code in Control Centre.
  4. On Android try Camera or Scan QR code in Quick Settings; support varies by model.
  5. Try another QR code to separate a damaged code from a phone issue.
  6. Do not open a link if its address or purpose is unclear.

The symptom narrows the cause

Scanning often fails because of light, focus, distance, angle or a damaged code. Android support differs by model.

What not to do

  • Do not open a suspicious URL without checking the domain.
  • Do not download a QR scanner from a random source.
  • Do not scan through glare or with a shaking hand.
  • Do not share ticket or login codes publicly.
