Laptop will not connect to Wi-Fi but phone does

Start with a cross-test: connect the laptop to your phone hotspot and another device to the same home network. If the laptop joins neither, focus on its Wi-Fi. If the hotspot works but home Wi-Fi does not, focus on the saved profile, frequency band and router.

Laptop cannot join Wi-Fi while a phone connection works

Quick checklist

  1. Make sure Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off.
  2. Test the phone on home Wi-Fi and the laptop on the phone hotspot.
  3. Restart the laptop. Restart the router only if you manage it.
  4. Forget only the affected network and join it again with the correct password.
  5. Check the date and time, install system updates and review VPN or security software.

Symptoms and likely direction

If no Wi-Fi networks appear, the wireless adapter may be disabled or its driver or hardware may be failing. If home Wi-Fi appears but will not connect, the saved profile, password, frequency band or router compatibility may be involved. If Wi-Fi connects but internet does not work, that is a later stage: IP addressing, VPN, DNS or the internet service.

What not to do

  • Do not copy the phone's IP address to the laptop; two devices must not use the same address.
  • Do not download drivers from random sites. Use the laptop manufacturer or operating system's official source.
  • Do not begin with a full network reset or router factory reset; saved networks and important settings can be lost.

When to stop

Stop changing settings on a work, school or housing network, when you do not manage the router, or when the device is organisation-managed. If the Wi-Fi adapter disappears, the issue began after a drop or liquid, or the manufacturer driver does not restore it, seek a device assessment.
