Your laptop is slow and the fan is loud: start here
A loud fan does not automatically mean the computer is broken. First find out what is using the CPU, memory or disk, then separate background work, heat, startup load and a possible hardware fault.

Short answer: run these five checks
- Save your work and open Task Manager or Activity Monitor: which process uses CPU or memory?
- Close only programs you recognise. Do not stop Windows or macOS system processes at random.
- Check startup apps and browser tabs; reducing startup load can improve boot time.
- Use a hard surface, keep vents clear and try the manufacturer's recommended power mode.
- If the sound grinds or continues before sign-in, stop home experiments and arrange a check.
One symptom, different causes
A slow interface and loud fan can come from software, heat or a mechanical problem. Note when the symptom begins.

Windows: measure before changing settings
- Open Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Processes and sort CPU, Memory and Disk.
- Open Task Manager → Startup apps and disable only apps you recognise.
- Open Settings → System → Power & battery and try Recommended mode if the device runs hot.
- Install updates and restart, but do not download random registry cleaners.
Mac: check load and temperature
- Open Applications → Utilities → Activity Monitor and inspect CPU and Memory.
- If Spotlight is indexing or the system is processing a large library, temporary fan noise can be normal.
- Keep vents clear and use the computer on a hard surface.
- If the fan runs for a long time without heavy work, identify the process before changing settings.
What not to do
- Do not blow compressed air into a closed device or open the cover without model-specific guidance.
- Do not stop unknown system processes based on their name alone.
- Do not buy RAM or an SSD before measuring the bottleneck.
- Stop using the device if it shuts down, smells burnt or the battery is swollen.
