No sound after connecting a monitor? Check where the audio goes
Start with the audio output, not driver removal. Windows may send sound to the monitor instead of the laptop speakers. A monitor name in the audio list does not by itself mean the monitor has speakers.

Safe checking order
- Choose a familiar short audio clip and start at low volume. First decide whether you want sound from the laptop, monitor or headphones.
- Open Windows 11 Settings → System → Sound. Under Output, select the device you want and check mute. Replay the same clip. Device names vary.
- For monitor sound, check the model’s manual for built-in speakers and the monitor’s own volume control. A headphone socket alone does not guarantee speakers.
- Compare two apps on the same output. If only one is silent, check its mute, the volume mixer and the speaker selection inside a meeting app. Do not change microphone settings to solve playback.
- Note the before-and-after result: selected output, app and whether sound played. If the right device is missing or everything stays silent, use the audio troubleshooter in Windows Get Help and keep its message.
Symptoms and possible causes
JVS Tuki’s comparison rule: if selecting the laptop speakers restores sound, that points towards routing rather than proving a speaker fault. If one app works and another does not, start with the app-specific check. A missing device is a different symptom from a listed but silent device. Comparisons narrow the investigation; they do not certify hardware health.
What not to do
- Do not turn volume to maximum: sound could return suddenly.
- Do not start with random driver packs, removing every audio device or resetting Windows.
- Do not unplug an entire USB-C dock during a file transfer: a storage device may be attached.
When to stop
Stop physical tests after damage or a spill. On a managed work computer, agree driver and system changes with IT. If the required output stays missing or troubleshooting does not help, note the computer and monitor models, connection type and test results. Silence alone is not a reason to buy speakers.
