Mouse double-clicks on one press: a setting or a device problem?

A file opening after one click does not automatically mean a broken mouse: File Explorer can be set to work that way. If one press triggers two actions in other apps too, use a comparison test before buying a replacement.

Safe checking order

  1. Save your work. Type a few test words in Notepad and try placing the cursor and selecting text. Do not test on payment buttons, by deleting files or by moving original documents.
  2. If only files or folders open after one click, open File Explorer’s three-dot menu → Options → General. Check whether items open with a single or double click. Choose double-click opening only if you want one click just to select an item. Menu names vary.
  3. If several apps are affected, check the wireless mouse’s power using its manufacturer’s instructions. Try a USB mouse or its receiver directly in the computer, without a dock. Change one thing and repeat the same test.
  4. Try a known-working mouse on this computer. If available, try the affected mouse on another computer as well. Repeat the same harmless text-selection test and note each result.
  5. If an intentional double-click is not recognised instead, open Windows 11 Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse → Additional mouse settings → Buttons. Adjust double-click speed to suit your pace. Pointer speed is a different setting; timing adjustment does not repair a broken button.

Symptoms and possible causes

JVS Tuki’s comparison rule: if the symptom follows the mouse to another computer while a second mouse works on the original computer, the mouse or its connection is more suspect. If both mice misbehave only on one computer, investigate that computer’s apps and settings. One successful test cannot rule out an intermittent fault. Note interrupted text selection separately.

What not to do

  • Do not install random driver packs or click-fixer tools, or edit the registry for this symptom.
  • Do not spray liquid inside the mouse or open its button mechanism. Follow the model’s cleaning instructions.
  • Do not remove Windows updates on the strength of a forum claim alone.

When to stop

Stop testing after physical damage or a spill. Check warranty options before opening the mouse. If clicks or selections are unreliable, use a working spare for important actions. Ask IT before software or driver changes on a managed work computer.
