Laptop microphone does not work

Check mute, the headset button, the selected input and permissions first. If the microphone works in the system test but not in a meeting, the app is probably using the wrong input.

Quick checklist

  1. Turn off mute in the meeting, keyboard or headset.
  2. Test the mic in Windows Sound settings or macOS Sound > Input.
  3. Check Windows Privacy & security > Microphone or macOS Privacy & Security > Microphone.
  4. Select the correct input in the meeting app and close other audio apps.
  5. Restart and install pending operating-system and audio-driver updates.

The symptom narrows the cause

If the system test hears nothing, check mute, permission and input device. If it works there but not in Teams, Zoom or a browser, focus on the app's microphone choice.

What not to do

  • Do not install random audio enhancers or drivers.
  • Do not grant microphone access to an unfamiliar website.
  • Do not change many settings at once without a way back.
