Keyboard typing the wrong characters in Windows? Check the layout first

If a key responds but produces the wrong character, check the keyboard layout before installing a fix or buying a replacement. Printed key labels, the typing layout and the language of Windows menus are three different things.

Safe checking order

  1. Open a blank Notepad document. Try a few letters and the troublesome symbol — never a password, PIN or customer information. Record a harmless example: the key pressed and the character produced.
  2. Use the taskbar input-language selector or Windows + Space. Choose the layout you need and repeat the test. This changes the typing layout, not the language of Windows menus.
  3. Compare the selected layout with the physical keyboard. Buying a computer in Finland does not by itself guarantee Finnish key labels, especially second-hand. Note the keyboard model and printed symbols. Do not rely on the ENG abbreviation alone.
  4. If the layout is missing, open Windows 11 Settings → Time & language → Language & region → the relevant language's options → Keyboards. Check installed layouts and add the one needed. Keep other languages you use. Labels vary between versions.
  5. Open Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → On-Screen Keyboard. You can enter a character with the mouse. Compare it with the same physical-key test; this alone does not prove a hardware fault.
  6. Try a second ordinary app. If only one app misbehaves, record the app and selected layout. If a key produces nothing, use our unresponsive laptop-key guide instead.

Symptoms and possible causes

Several symbols consistently appearing in the wrong places fits a layout mismatch. A problem confined to one app needs an app-specific check; an unresponsive key is a different symptom. JVS Tuki's practical rule: one test line, one change, then repeat the same line. Do not change three settings at once.

What not to do

  • Do not test passwords in a visible text editor or an online keyboard tester.
  • Do not remove all languages, install random driver packages or pull off keycaps for this symptom.
  • Do not change the Windows display language just to correct one symbol.

When to stop

If the problem prevents sign-in, check the input language on the sign-in screen instead of repeatedly guessing the password. Ask IT about organisation-managed settings. After a spill or physical damage, stop key testing and seek a repair assessment.

When is help worthwhile?

JVS Tuki can help match your physical keyboard with the languages you need to type. Checking the setup is often worthwhile before buying another device.
