Bluetooth headphones sound bad during calls

If music sounds normal but becomes thin as soon as Teams, Zoom, a game or another app opens the microphone, the headphones may not be faulty. First use the same headphones for output and the laptop microphone for input. If quality returns, the cause is likely the Bluetooth call mode rather than the speaker drivers.

Quick checklist

  1. Close calling, gaming and recording apps, then play a familiar audio track.
  2. Open the app that triggers the problem and note whether quality changes only when its microphone becomes active.
  3. In the app, keep the headphones as output but choose the laptop microphone as input.
  4. Check Windows Settings > System > Sound for the correct output and input, then check the app's own device choices.
  5. Install Windows updates, the PC maker's Bluetooth driver and official headset firmware before pairing again.

Why does this happen?

Classic Bluetooth normally uses high-quality A2DP for listening and HFP call mode when the headset microphone is needed. Call mode must share limited bandwidth in both directions, so playback can become narrower or mono. Windows 11 LE Audio can improve simultaneous stereo and microphone use, but only when the PC, headphones, Windows version and manufacturer drivers all support it.

What not to do

  • Do not buy new headphones before the microphone cross-test; the issue may be compatibility or device selection.
  • Do not begin by disabling random Bluetooth services or editing the registry. You may remove the microphone or the entire audio device.
  • Do not use driver-updater tools or unofficial download sites. Get the driver from the PC or Bluetooth-adapter manufacturer.
  • Do not assume every Windows 11 PC has the LE Audio setting. It appears only with a supported hardware and driver combination.

When to stop

Stop changing settings on an organisation-managed PC, with a Bluetooth hearing device, or before a safety-critical call. Seek a device assessment if distortion also occurs on a phone and by cable, the headphones become hot or the battery swells, or the Bluetooth adapter disappears entirely.
